Proton Pump Inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors (PPI’s) are commonly referred to as heartburn medications. They are typically prescribed for conditions such as Gastrointestinal Reflux Disease (GERD). However, these medications are also available over the counter (OTC). The following medications are part of the PPI class. Some are available by both prescription and OTC.

  • Nexium
  • Prilosec
  • Prevacid
  • Protonix
  • AcipHex

These drugs are taken by millions worldwide. Studies have linked these medications to a number of adverse side effects including Acute Interstitial Nephritis (AIN) and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). In February of 2016 the medical journal JAMA – Journal of the American Medical Association published a study that indicated people taking PPI’s are at a 20% to 50% increased risk for developing Chronic Kidney Disease.

AIN is classified as an allergic reaction. A recent report published by CMAJ OPEN concluded that older adults taking PPI are 3 times more likely to develop nephritis. AIN can develop within a few days or weeks use of a PPI. AIN has also been reported with other drugs such as common painkillers. The condition, if untreated can lead to severe kidney damage.

If you have taken a name brand PPI medication and experienced kidney complications, you may be eligible to pursue legal action. A quick, free phone call is all it takes to see if we can help.
